Water Water Everywhere
Moderate Waterlogging If you feel the problem is moderate, you could get the builder to dig all the existing turf into the garden to a depth of at least 18", using a rotivator (or by hand if it's small). The turf would help to open up the soil, as it is organic matter, and it would be a waste just to throw it away. This would then leave you with bare soil, to which more organic matter should be added, for reasons already given. Loamy (or good, workable) soils comprise clay, sand and gravel particles, and lots of organic matter, giving them a dark brown colour. Once your soil has had lots of organic matter added, get the builder to returf. This process should be attempted from late April onwards, because clay soils warm up later than loamy or sandy soils.
