the root of the problem My house is new and the garden laid mostly to turf. The top soil used by the builder was full of clay and the garden waterlogs very easily and the grass is very soft. The surface is becoming very uneven. What would you recommend we ask the builder to do to rectify the problem and when would be the best time for this remedial work? the next step Bought-in topsoils are often predominantly clay particles, because they are sifted, and sifting removes all the larger sandy particles and organic matter, leaving the smaller ones behind; clay particles are the smallest of all. Ideally, your topsoil should have had lots of organic matter added to it, which would have improved its texture by opening it up, and would also have added to its fertility. If you do nothing, you will probably find that you have the reverse problem in the summer; the likelihood is that your lawn will dry out and crack. Without remedial action, your turf will suffer, as the roots need air as well as water in the soil, and in a waterlogged soil there is no air. There are various alternative courses of action depending on the severity of the problem -
