Building a Pond

Water is an ideal way of adding an extra dimension to your garden, whether as a separate feature or used in conjunction with other elements in the garden.

Water features come in many forms. From ponds to streams, waterfalls to fountains, the only limit to the complexity of your water feature (budget and space aside) is your imagination.

The aim of this article is to provide you with a brief insight into the types of materials available and the various types of features used in today s garden. Finally, we have provided a step by step guide to building a formal pool, similar to the one seen in our Pavilion garden at Wenvoe.

Tips

An area of still water at ground level creates a mirrored setting for surrounding features.

A dark lining will intensify surface reflections.

Not only does running water provide a calming effect in the garden, but also helps to baffle external noises such as traffic.

Keep water crystal clear by installing a pump and fountain/ waterfall. This helps to oxygenate the water preventing the build up of algae.

Alternatively introduce fish and oxygenating plants (approx. 10 plants per m square).

When using fountains ensure they are sheltered from the wind or you may find your pond emptying quickly during windy periods.

When using flexible liners, it is essential that you place a fabric insulation or sand underneath to prevent sharp stones or debris puncturing the liner.

For effective oxygenation your pump should generally be circulating the content of your pool/ pond every hour.
