Getting the Right Level

Once you have decided upon the correct foundation for your paving slabs you can really get started.

You now need to mark out the area to be paved and dig it out to the required level. Mark out the area using wooden pegs and a piece of string and excavate the area so that it is level.

Then we get a bit clever. To create the 1:40 fall you will need to do the following:

Make sure the ground you have excavated is level.

Place two pegs of the same height 2 metres apart in your excavated area.

The first peg should be at the highest point of your patio and the second peg at the point where the patio will eventually slope.

Place a spirit level on a piece of straight wood and place this on top of the two pegs ( at this point the reading should indicate that the ground is level.)

Take a block of wood which is 50mm thick and place this on top of the second peg ( the one which indicates the lowest point of the patio)

Your spirit level will now show an incline.

Tap the second peg into the ground until the spirit level shows a level reading once again Remove the block of wood.

This will now create a 1:40 slope Fill in with the appropriate foundation
