All about Decking - Choosing your Site

When choosing a site to build your decking it is important that you consider a few factors:

Ensure that the site is level and free of any grass or weeds. Any vegetative growth will appear through the gaps in the decking and will be difficult to remove once the decking is in place.

The site should ideally be in a sunny dry position, to prevent the build up of slippery mildew.

Site should ideally slope away from external walls, if you are considering constructing your deck next to a house.

Choosing your Decking

There are two main types of decking to choose from - plain/smooth decking or profiled/grooved decking.

Plain or smooth decking, as the name suggests, has a smooth planed surface, allowing water to run off easily.

Profiled or grooved decking has many advantages. Its contoured surface provides grip and durability, and creates an interesting texture.

For added effect both types can be combined to create exciting designs, adding additional interest to your deck. For example profiled decking can be placed in areas around steps to improve grip.
