QUESTION
I've read your excellent decking guide which is very helpful. I notice your
footings sit on the surface. My site has a slight slope which means I will
probably need
to use posts on side to keep the deck level. Assuming I set the post on a concrete
base, how deep should the hole be?
ANSWER
Thank you for your enquiry and your compliment regarding our article on decking.
It is always good to receive feedback about the web content. How do you find
the site? We are currently re-designing areas of our website so you will
shortly see new articles and new features, as well as an on-line shop.
In reply to your question regarding setting posts and the size of the hole:
The depth of hole is dependant on the size of upright used and the height and weight of the decking.
If the fall is roughly around 1m, then a 100mm post set 600mm (2') into the ground should be sufficient.
Anything above 1m then there is considerable strain placed on the uprights, in which case it would be advisable to contact a local landscaper/builder for an on-site assessment.
I hope this information will aid you in your project. If you require any further information do not hesitate to contact the StyleGardens Team.
