Pre-moulded
water spouts are an excellent way of creating wall-mounted
water features.
They
are available in many different styles, such as lion faces,
suns and moons, cherubs, dragons, and can be made of metal,
terracotta, fibre glass or plastic.
All
you need is a self-contained water supply and a pump - the
plastic pipe which comes with the pump is attached to the
wall and this feeds the water to the spout, from where it
falls back into the container.

Water
features are extremely popular today as gardeners realise that they
add another dimension to their gardens by introducing sound, and
because of the wide variety of features available.
If
you have children, you will probably want to avoid containers of
water for safety reasons, but even then it's possible to have fun
with pebble pools, for example, which have safe hidden reservoirs.
Maureen
would love to turn the smaller of the two raised beds (measuring
approx. 1000 x 600 mm) into a raised pond, with a wall mounted fountain
of some sort spilling into it.
This
existing raised bed is made from bricks and mortar, and will therefore
need a liner of some sort in order for it to be able to hold water.
It
is possible to purchase pre-formed rectangular plastic tanks to
contain water - sometimes a small central heating expansion tank
does the job quite cheaply - but of course it's easier to build
the wall around one the right size than find one to fit afterwards.
The
tank needs to be very sturdy, since the volume of water it will
hold creates a lot of pressure, and if it fits exactly the brick
walls will help to support it, but if not it may distort. In this
instance, with the raised bed already in place, it is better to
use a sheet of butyl pond liner.
