Roses
If you're feeling down, buy yourself some roses.
Fragrant blooms contain a chemical called phenethylamine,
which contains an amino acid known to induce the build
up of beta-endorphines, also referred to as 'happy hormones'.
Apparently a rose is not as sweet today as a few years
ago. Rose breeders are far more interested in the appearance
and a longer shelf life than the scent of the beautiful
bloom. It's important to remember that there are
more senses to stimulate than simply visual, including
the sense of smell.
Sensory gardens are becoming increasingly popular,
particularly in schools. The children are being introduced
to the positive aspects of plants and gardening at an
early age. If interest is held throughout the years,
I'm sure when they eventually have their own gardens
everything will be coming up roses!
