[Hello from Louise]
Hello from Louise!

AUTUMM 2005

Fruit is delicious and also a welcome sight in a garden. Fruit trees such as cherry and apple look particularly beautiful in bloom. The trees also bring an element of structure to a garden and will earn their keep in a garden by supplying you with ample amounts of fruit throughout the season.

Fruit is such an important part of people's diets that it's mentioned in sentences not related to food. Some people blush and seem to go as red as a raspberry, while others just feel like a gooseberry at times. One of my personal favourites is when people or life generally is compared to a lemon. I suppose it's because lemons can be quite bitter at times. This particular comparison is emphasised in a well-known song by Meatloaf, where he states, 'Life is a lemon and I want my money back'. Of course, if you're an optimist, you'll no doubt find life peachy! Don't you find comments such as these make life far more interesting and just put the cherry on the cake!

Roses

If you're feeling down, buy yourself some roses. Fragrant blooms contain a chemical called phenethylamine, which contains an amino acid known to induce the build up of beta-endorphines, also referred to as 'happy hormones'.

Apparently a rose is not as sweet today as a few years ago. Rose breeders are far more interested in the appearance and a longer shelf life than the scent of the beautiful bloom. It's important to remember that there are more senses to stimulate than simply visual, including the sense of smell.

Sensory gardens are becoming increasingly popular, particularly in schools. The children are being introduced to the positive aspects of plants and gardening at an early age. If interest is held throughout the years, I'm sure when they eventually have their own gardens everything will be coming up roses!

Christmas

Within what seems to be no time at all Christmas will be here. The festive season is eagerly anticipated by children and adults alike. Shops start to fill with customers searching for that special present for a loved one and advent calendars will be viewed daily. I like the chocolate contained in some advent calendars, as chocolate contains the so called 'happy hormones', and also tastes delicious.

There's no harm in treating yourself to something tasty at Christmas and you can always eat healthier in the New Year. If you're a creative person and want to make your own Christmas fruit cake, go for it! Including a touch of alcohol or Christmas spirit, so to speak, will add to the overall taste of your cake. You can try and bribe Santa with your culinary creation; perhaps then he'll surprise you with your perfect present. If he shopped at StyleGardens I'm sure it will be just what you asked for!
